DILLON, Mont. – The University of Providence men's basketball team fell to Montana Western 79-73 Saturday afternoon in Dillon, Mont.
Down 61-74 with 4:21 left in the second half, the Argos (11-10, 2-6) turned up the heat, going on a 10-2 lead to cut the lead to five with 41 seconds remaining.
Emmett Linton III made a layup to cut the lead to three, but the Bulldogs (13-10, 2-6) made a free throw on the other end to make it a two-possession game. A
Dawson Fowler three-pointer came up short, and the Bulldogs hit two more free throws to secure the game.
"We got down at Northern and we just kind of laid over and got beat pretty bad," assistant coach
Tyler Hurley said. "Tonight when that happened and they made runs, we countered with runs of our own. It was good to see that. We just need to clean up the little things so that will give us a chance to win."
Playing without
Marcus Stephens, who was out with an injury, multiple guys stepped up to pick up the scoring load, resulting in four Argos scoring in double-figures. Linton led the team with 18 points off the bench, while
Brendan Howard and
Rashee Stocks scoring 17 and 16 respectively. Fowler added 12 for the squad.
"Emmett came out and probably had his best game in an Argo uniform," Hurley said. "Dawson did some nice things. Brendan was close to a double-double. It was good to get some other guys involved and get them some confidence scoring the ball. When we get Marcus back hopefully they keep that same mentality."
The Bulldogs also had four players finish in double-digits, led by a 25-point performance from Jalen Hodges. Jamal Stephenson added 16 points while Michael Haverfield added 15.
The Argos will take the court again on Jan. 27 with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Montana Tech.
