Maldonado Leads #22 Argos to 11th Straight Win

DILLON, Mont. – The #22 University of Providence women's basketball team picked up their 11th straight victory Saturday afternoon, defeating #25 Montana Western 75-66.

The team faced a ton of adversity in the win. With the Argos (20-3, 7-1) up ten entering the final quarter, the Bulldogs (12-8, 2-6) clawed back to make it 69-66 with 1:33 left. The Argos, who were forced to compete without starting post players Maddy Dixon and Parker Esary due to them fouling out, responded with a big corner jumpshot from Delaney Pink with 1:07 to extend the lead to six. The Argos got a stop on the next possession, and Emilee Maldonado hit two free throws to effectively seal the game.

"We found a way," head coach Bill Himmelberg said. "The biggest thing was that we competed the whole time. It was tough tonight, we faced a lot of adversity. Parker only got 19 minutes and fouled out, Maddy fouled out so we were undersized. Different kids stepped up. Delaney hit a big shot late. Elly Teske made a big play late. I was proud of the kids and how we battled."

Maldonado held things together for the squad, finishing with 26 points, four steals and three assists and nailing four three-pointers on the night. Esary added 14 points and seven boards in only 19 minutes of action, while Brooklyn Harn added 12 points and five rebounds off the bench. Reed Hazard added 10 points and seven rebounds for the squad.

"Emilee steadied us through the storm," Himmelberg said. "She got us into our stuff and remained calm and composed the whole time. Everyone else stepped up to fill the gaps. Our girls were playing well together."

Brynley Fitzgerald led the Bulldogs with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists while Jenni Weber added 12 points for the squad.

The win marks the 11th straight win for the Argos, who haven't lost since Dec. 2. The Argos have defeated five different ranked teams during the winning streak.

"Any time you can win in the Frontier it's big," Himmelberg said. "Western is really good. They are Top 25 in the country for a reason. I'm pumped that we faced so much controversy on the road. That will help us in the future win some games. Our team doesn't get too hot or too low. We stay steady. It's a big win for a program."

The team will return to the court next Thursday with a 5:00 p.m. game against Montana Tech in the McLaughlin Center.
