BUTTE, Mont. – University of Providence head women's basketball coach
Bill Himmelberg earned his 200
th career victory on Saturday as the #19 Argos rolled past Montana Tech 87-69.
Himmelberg, who was named head coach of the Argos prior to the 2010-11 season, currently has a 200-154 career coaching record, good for a 56.5% winning percentage. Earlier in the season, he
became the all-time winningest basketball coach in program history, passing Argo legend Ray Dodds. During his tenure the Argos have made six NAIA National Tournament Appearances.
"It feels great to hit 200," Himmelberg said. "When you get to these milestones you think of all the people that helped you get here. Gene McAllister hired me and gave me a chance to be a college basketball coach. Our current administration supports us so well and continue to allow me to coach here. I've had a ton of great assistant coaches over the years. I couldn't do it without them. I couldn't do it without my wife. Most importantly I think of all the great players. We've had so many great players that chose to come to us. I'm just very thankful for all the people that took part in getting these 200 wins for the program."
Coming out of the break with a 37-33 halftime lead, the Argos (24-5, 11-3) exploded for 31 points to expand the lead to 18. The squad hit seven of their ten three-point attempts in the quarter, and hit an astounding 17 of their 26 attempts for the game, good for 65.4%.
"We played really well," Himmelberg said. "We shared the ball, we're moving it, we're shooting it well. We're looking a lot better. We had lots of different people scoring. It was a solid offensive performance."
Four players scored in double-figures for the Argos.
Brooklyn Harn led the team in scoring off the bench, hitting six three-pointers to finish with 20 points on the night.
Emilee Maldonado finished with 19 points, five boards and five assists.
Maddy Dixon recorded 15 points and team-high six assists, while
Parker Esary finished with yet another double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling 13 boards.
"Brooklyn was great tonight," Himmelberg said. "In big games we need people to step up and she stepped up tonight and was able to make shots for us tonight and show what she can do. We're sharing the ball like we know how we do. We made the extra pass tonight. We got a great shot instead of just a good shot."
Brooke Heggie scored 12 points for the Orediggers (12-17, 3-11). Mollie Peoples, Tavia Rooney and Dani Urick all notched 11 for the squad.
The win, combined with Carroll's win over Rocky Mountain, creates a three-way tie
atop the Frontier Conference standings with one regular season game remaining. The Argos will host the #7 Fighting Saints at home next Thursday in the McLaughlin Center.
"It's a big game," Himmelberg said. "We have a chance to take care of business at home. We have to make sure that we do what we can do. Hopefully we'll come out ready to play and have a good game."
