Argos Fall to Mountaineers in Day One of Weekend Series

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The University of Providence softball team fell to Eastern Oregon in both games of a doubleheader on Friday. The Argos (0-16, 0-11) fell to the Mountaineers (19-8, 9-2), who are receiving votes in the NAIA National Rankings, 9-0 in the first game and 11-2 in the second game.

The Mountaineers outhit the Argos 12 to three in the first game of the day with Macy Mangold, Taylor Mathews and McKenna Montgomery all recording hits on the day. Montgomery started on the mound for the squad, recording two strikeouts in the game.

The Argos came out ready to respond in the second game. With Sam Hernandez on first, Ryen Palmer singled to the pitcher. An errant throw allowed Palmer to advance to second and Hernandez to cross home plate to give the Argos a 1-0 lead. Mathews came up to bat next, singling up the middle to bring Palmer home and give the squad a 2-0 lead. The Mountaineers managed to dig into the lead with a run of their own in the bottom of the second.

The Mountaineers had a big third inning. After the Argos stranded a batter in the top of the third inning, the Mountaineers rattled off nine runs to take a 10-2 lead. They added one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead to nine.

"In the second game our third inning really did us in," Egan said. "We let a couple bad breaks get to us and we didn't compose ourselves quickly enough to shake it off. Hopefully we'll learn from it and come out with a renewed energy tomorrow."

The two teams will finish off their weekend series on Saturday with another doubleheader. The first game will begin at March 26 at 12:00 p.m. MTN.
