PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Providence men's basketball program defeated Multnomah University 95-93 in overtime Friday night.
The Lions (1-1) jumped out to an early 9-4 lead but a layup by junior
Jamil Bowles brought the game within one.
Multnomah would respond with an 8-2 run to extend their lead to eight halfway through the first half.
A layup by senior
Davien Harris-Williams as time expired in the first half cut the Lions lead to four going into the break.
The second half was back and forth with each team trading buckets and neither team jumping out to a lead of more than five.
UP (3-1) would hit a pair of three pointers by Harris-Williams and senior
Sam Vining to retake the lead 60-55 halfway through the second half.
A few minutes later
Drayton Caoile and Bowles would carry the Argos to a 7-0 run extending their lead to eight with seven minutes left.
The Lions would answer going on a 19-3 run of their own to give Multnomah a 78-70 lead with a minute and a half remaining.
UP would force the Lions to hit their free throws down the stretch, and after a few misses Caoile hit a three pointer and a layup with under 15 seconds remaining to tie the game at 81 at the end of regulation.
Both teams would go back and forth in overtime but a pair of free throws by senior
Eric Milner gave the Argos a three-point edge with 19 seconds left. Despite a late chance for the Lions, UP completed the comeback effort in overtime, winning 95-93.
The Argos will be back in action Nov. 11 for the Portland Classic finale against Warner Pacific University. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (MST) in Portland, Ore. Â Â Â
