Argos Defeat Cumberland University in OT

LEBANON, Tenn. – The University of Providence women's basketball program defeated Cumberland University 61-58 Saturday afternoon.

The Argos (5-0) scored the first field goal of the game when graduate transfer Ashlee Maldonado found sophomore McKenna Reggear for a jumper.

Each side would trade baskets but an 8-0 run by the Phoenix (2-3) to start the second quarter gave Cumberland University a 21-11 lead.

Despite freshman Keanna Salave'a scoring six straight points, the Phoenix would end the first half on a 9-1 run to extend their lead to 11 going into the break.

UP would cut the lead to two to end the third quarter behind free throws by Maldonado, Reggear, and a three pointer by senior Kolby Pimperton.

The Argos would continue their momentum into the fourth quarter when a three by freshman Taliah Lee and a jumper by Maldonado retook the lead for UP 49-44.

Cumberland University would not go away hitting a three pointer with three seconds left to send the game to overtime tied at 52.

Freshman Monique Carter would hit a three to open overtime and UP would not relinquish their lead down the stretch with Maldonado going 4-4 at the free throw line to secure the 62-58 victory.

Maldonado led the way for the Argos with 16pts, 7reb, and 4ast, and Salave'a added 13pts and 10reb of her own. Reggear also had a season high in points with 10 in the win.

The Argos will be back in action Nov. 17 when they host #9 Vanguard University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center.
