Men's Soccer Heads to CCC Tournament for First Time Since 2018

11/4/2023 12:00:00 PM

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- The University of Providence men's soccer program will be competing in the Cascade Collegiate Conference postseason tournament for the first time since 2018.

Head coach Will Hander on the CCC tournament berth stated, "I made a promise to our returners that if they bought into what we were trying to do with this program, we will make the conference tournament, and it is an honor to come through on that promise. Our program hasn't been to the conference tournament since 2018 so it's great to get back to postseason play."

How They Got There
The Argos went 7-8-2 this season and 5-6-2 in conference play after finishing 2-11-1 and 2-8-1 last season. UP got their 17th point of the season on Oct. 20 when they defeated Northwest University 5-2. The Argos also had two athletes win the CCC Player of the Week in freshman Jose Vasquez on Sept. 25 and freshman Teddy Benbow on Oct. 2. UP had not won a player of the week award since the 2019 season.

Season Leaders
Vasquez is the goal and shot leader for the Argos with 13 goals and 49 shots. With 13 goals so far this season, Vasquez is now tied for fourth all-time for single season goals in Argo Athletics history. Freshman Geovanni Lugo and senior Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld each have a team high four assists and the second most goals with three apiece. In goal, Benbow is the leader with 52 saves so far this season.

Warner Pacific
The Argos fell 6-0 in their lone matchup with the Knights this season. Despite losing the last four meetings, UP is 6-5 in their last 11 against Warner Pacific. The Knights are 12-3-2 so far this season and have not lost a game since Oregon Tech defeated them 1-0 on Sept. 16.

How to Watch
The Argos will be playing this matchup at 11 a.m. in Springfield, Ore.
