Box Score DILLON, Mont. – The University of Providence volleyball program defeated Montana Western 3-2 Saturday afternoon.
In the first set the Bulldogs (18-6) jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but a pair of kills by junior
Allyah Tokelau brought the match within one. The Argos (15-10) would continue their momentum scoring six in a row to take an 11-7 lead. UP would score eight of the last 10 points of the set to win the first 25-15. Junior
Nina Janjic led the way with five kills in the first set.
Montana Western would score six of the first seven points in the second set to take a 6-1 lead. A kill by redshirt freshman
Cabry Taylor cut the Bulldogs lead to three, but back-to-back kills by Jazi Smith extended Montana Western's lead to six. UMW would pull away down the stretch taking the second set 25-15.
In the third set the Bulldogs scored the first seven points to take a 7-0 lead. UP would respond scoring seven of the next nine points behind kills by freshman
Martyna Fiedler and senior
Zoe Naugle to cut the lead to two. Each side would trade runs but three kills by Janjic and an ace by sophomore
Ruby Morse gave the Argos a 13-12 lead. Following a Bulldog timeout, the Argos would go on an 8-1 run to take a 21-13 advantage. A pair of kills by Fiedler would secure the set for UP 25-18. Janjic and Fiedler had three kills apiece in the third set.
The fourth set was back and forth with neither team gaining an edge by more than two until Montana Western scored seven points in a row to take a 16-8 lead. The Bulldogs would maintain their advantage the rest of the way taking the fourth set 25-13.
In the deciding set, UP jumped out to an 8-5 lead, but three straight points by the Bulldogs tied the match at eight. Both sides would go back and forth with ties at 9, 12, and 13 before kills by Naugle and Fiedler secured the fifth set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
Janic led the way for the Argos with 15 kills and Fiedler added eight as well. Sophomore
Bella Thompson had 23 assists and junior
Nati Slazynska added 16. Defensively, senior
Taylor Christensen had 27 digs and Naugle had three total blocks.
The Argos will be back in action Nov. 10-11 when they host the Frontier Conference Tournament. The first match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. in Great Falls, Mont. Â
