HELENA, Mont. - The regular season came to a close Saturday for the University of Providence women's basketball team after the Argos fell at No. 11-ranked Carroll College 74-60 in Frontier Conference action at Helena.
Both teams started the game strong combining for 43 first quarter points. Maddy Dixon led Providence with nine points in the first 10 minutes of play. The Argos trailed 23-20 after one and started the second period fast as well, taking a 28-25 lead after a Kenedy Cartwright layup with 7:39 remaining in the half. A Sienna Swannack three would tie the game followed by a Kyndall Keller jumper to give the Saints a lead they never gave up again.
Reed Hazard scored a team-high 17 points with Dixon adding 14 points and six rebounds. Providence went 23 of 59 from the field, 7 of 20 from three-point range and 8-14 at the free throw line. The Argos were outrebounded 34-22 but used 13 offensive rebounds to total 13 second chance points.
Carroll College finished 26-47 from the field, 4 of 9 from three and 18 of 20 from the free throw line. Jamie Pickens led all scorers with 22 points, adding 14 rebounds. Keller scored 20 points and Genesis Wilkinson chipped in with 12 points for the Saints which closed the Frontier schedule 14-1 and went 23-5 during the regular season. The Saints will take an 11-game winning streak into the Frontier Conference tournament that begins next Sunday in Great Falls.
Providence will be the four seed at the tournament and face fifth seed Montana Tech Sunday, Feb. 26 at Four Seasons Arena. For tournament information and game times, check out www.upargos.com.
