HELENA, Mont. - Carroll College missed just seven shots in the second half to erase a one-point deficit at the half to beat the University of Providence 89-82 Saturday in the Frontier Conference regular season finale for both teams.
The Saints went 18 of 25 in the final 20 minutes to turn a 38-37 Argo lead at intermission into the victory. Carroll jumped out to an 18-6 lead to start the game in Helena, but the Argos would go on a 22-9 run to take a 28-27 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half. Providence would build as much as a five-point lead before the Saints closed the half with four straight points.
In the second half, the Argos led 51-50 after two Kenny Curtis free throws, but a Jonny Hillman three pointer would give the Saints the lead back with 13:48 and the Argos never could close the gap.
Carroll would finish the game 33-57 from the field, 9 of 17 from deep and 14-20 at the free throw line. Hillman scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Andrew Cook added 21 points with Isaiah Moore scoring 18 while Brendan Temple had 12 points.
Marcus Stephens paced all scorers with 36 points on 12-21 shooting including four three's and a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line. Sam Vining and Curtis each scored 11 in the loss. The Argos were outrebounded 39-22 and outscored 46-28 in the paint.
Carroll College (13-13, 7-8) will be the No. 4-seed in the Frontier Conference tournament and takes on 5th-seed Rocky Mountain College Sunday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m.
Providence (13-15, 7-8) enters the postseason on a five-game losing streak but despite that, holds onto the No. 2-seed and first round bye thanks to owning the tiebreaker over both Carroll and MSU-Northern. The Argos will next play in the semifinals Monday night, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. A full tournament preview will be up early in the week at www.upargos.com.
