GREAT FALLS, Mont. - Carroll College outscored the University of Providence 25-10 in the third quarter to turn a two-point halftime deficit into a 67-52 victory in the first semifinal of the Frontier Conference Women's Basketball Championships Monday in Great Falls.
The first quarter saw both teams start hot from the field with each shooting over 53 percent in the first 10 minutes of action. The No. 11-ranked Saints led 20-16 after one. In the second quarter, Providence kept up the strong shooting as the Argos outscored Carroll 14-8 holding the Saints to just 1-12 from the field. Providence took a 30-28 lead into the break.
The third quarter was the complete opposite as the top-seed in the Frontier held the Argos to just a 3 of 11 effort from the floor, while Jamie Pickens outscored UP on her own with 11 points. The Argos struggled shooting in the final quarter going 3 for 12 in falling to the rival Saints for a fourth time this season.
Pickens led all scorers with 26 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Kyndall Keller and Maddie Geritz each scored 12 with Sienna Swannack adding 10 points. Kamden Hilborn had eight assists for the Saints who finished 23-56 (41.1%) from the field, five of 17 from the three-point line and went 16-20 at the free throw line, with Pickens going 8-12.
Carroll has won 12 straight games and will play in the Championship of the Frontier Conference tournament Tuesday night at 5 p.m.
Providence (16-14) was led by graduate senior Reed Hazard's 13 points, while Kenedy Cartwright added nine points and a team-high six rebounds. Brooklyn Harn scored eight points along with Kolby Pimperton and Maddy Dixon scored seven points with five rebounds. The Argos shot 36.7% (18-49) from the floor, three of 14 from deep and 13-17 from the free throw line.
