SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Taylor Mathews drove in six with a triple and a double but the University of Providence fell on a walk off single by Sam Silver in the bottom of the seventh and the Argos were swept at Bushnell in Cascade Collegiate Conference softball Saturday afternoon 13-12. The Argos bounced back for a 9-7 non-conference win to close out the weekend.
Mathews went 3 for 4 at the plate in game one including a bases-loaded triple in Providence's six-run fifth inning that gave the Argos a 10-8 lead. She would later score on a Karlie David single to make the score 11-8.
The Beacons battled back with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth tying the game at 11 when Silver drove in two with a single up the middle. A bases-loaded walk scored Mathews in the top of the sixth only to see Bushnell's Silver continue her torrid weekend with the walk off winner.
Deven Creech took the loss going 6.1 innings allowing 13 runs, 10 earned, on 10 hits. She walked 11 and struck out five. Silver not only was 4 for 4 at the plate, she also tossed a complete game to get the win allowing 12 runs on 11 hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
David went 3 for 5 at the plate with an RBI and Makayla Hernandez was 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
In game two of the day, the Argos scored five times in the second and held on for the 9-7 victory. Creech went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI, Macy Mangold smashed a grand slam while Carter Thornton got the win in relief, tossing 3.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits.
Bushnell (7-20, 4-10) swept Friday's conference double-header to take all three CCC games led by Silver who tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts and went 3 for 3 at the plate.
Providence (2-17, 1-11) will play a doubleheader Tuesday at Missoula in an exhibition game and a scrimmage. The next counting action for the Argos will be next Friday and Saturday traveling to No. 12-ranked College of Idaho in Caldwell.
