KIRKLAND, Wash. - The University of Providence softball team earned a 6-5 win in game two Saturday to salvage a split against Northwest University (Wash.) in Kirkland.
The Argos picked up the win in nonconference action against the Eagles after dropping game one Saturday 3-0, falling for the third straight time against Northwest in Cascade Conference play. Providence scored four times in the third and twice in the seventh to get the win for Carter Thornton who tossed four innings in relief. Taylor Mathews tallied two of the six Argo hits in the victory.
In the CCC series finale Saturday, Providence was held to three hits as Northwest scored all its runs in the bottom of the first to earn the league sweep. Jaden Williams took the loss but settled in nicely after a rough first inning. Williams went five innings allowing six hits, just three after the first.
With the sweep at the hands of Northwest, the Argos dropped to 3-23 in Cascade play, and improved to 7-29 overall after the game two victory. Providence will close its season next week with six games starting Tuesday hosting Carroll College. Those two games will be followed by four games Thursday and Friday against Corban University (Ore.).
