Box Score 2 BUTTE, Mont. – After two wins on Friday, the University of Providence women's volleyball team finished the Big Sky Challenge unscathed as they picked up another pair of victories Saturday.
The Argos (4-0) defeated the College of Idaho in a five-set thriller at the HPER complex to begin their day. UP won the first two sets of the match with 14 and 12 kills in each, respectively.
CI (1-3) would win the next two sets forcing a winner take all fifth set. A back-and-forth match approached an 11-11 tie before the Argos would win the final four points to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
The Argos had contributions from all over with junior
Mady Hoerner leading the way with 14 kills. Junior
Nina Janjic added 13 kills of her own and junior
Riley Davis added seven for UP. Junior
Taylor Christensen led all players with 25 digs and junior
Nati Slazynska and sophomore
Bella Thompson combined for 51 assists.
In the second match of the day the Argos narrowly defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God University 3-1 to finish their trip to Butte, Mont.
Despite the Lions (0-4) winning the first set 25-20 the Argos would come storming back to win the next three.
In the second and third set for the Argos they depended on their blocking to close out sets. Senior
Zoe Naugle and Janjic combined for a block to end the second set, and redshirt freshman
Cabry Taylor closed out the third with a solo block and a block assist with junior
Kalamela Liua on consecutive points.
Leading the way for the Argos was Janjic with 14 kills, Hoerner with 11, and Liua with 10. Defensively, the Argos had a full team effort with Christensen leading the way with 17 digs and Thompson and freshman
Ellie Carlson each adding 14 of their own. Thompson and Slazynska also added 48 assists combined for UP.
The Argos are back in action Aug. 25 when they play Oregon Tech in the Magic Island Hawai'i Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Shark Tank. The match between the Argos and the Owls is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. (MST).
