Argos Wrap Up West Palm Beach Invitational With Victory

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The University of Providence women's basketball program wrapped up the West Palm Beach Invitational with a 73-63 victory over Huntington University.

The Argos (9-2) scored the first four points of the game behind a pull up jumper and a layup from senior Ashlee Maldonado and following a miss from the Foresters (6-6), layups from sophomores Keanna Salave'a and Taliah Lee put UP ahead 10-0.

Over the next three minutes Huntington responded with an 11-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the game 13-12, but a layup from Maldonado gave the Argos a one-point edge.

Each side went back and forth the rest of the quarter but a layup from Maldonado for her eighth point of the first put UP in front 21-19 going into the break.

The Foresters tied the game at 21 to open the second, but an 11-0 run from UP behind three-pointers from Maldonado and junior Ainsley Thurber put UP ahead 37-23.

Huntington slowly cut into the Argo lead the rest of the quarter as UP went into the break leading 39-36. Maldonado led all scorers with 15 points in the first half.

UP opened the third quarter scoring the first 11 points behind a pair of three-pointers from Pimperton and Carter to make it 50-36.

Both teams added baskets the rest of the quarter but a three from the Foresters cut the UP lead to nine heading into the fourth.

The Argos pushed their lead to 15 off layups from Salave'a and Lee to open the fourth quarter, and despite pressure from the Foresters, UP cruised to a 73-63 victory.

Ashlee Maldonado led the way with 19 points while Keanna Salave'a added a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds.

The Argos will be back in action Jan. 4 for their Frontier Conference Opener versus #21 Carroll College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Helena, Mont.
