GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's basketball program fell 93-92 to Carroll College Friday night.
The Argos (15-15) scored the first basket of the game off a step-back fadeaway from senior Sam Vining, and on the next two possessions a pull-up jumper from Vining and a layup from senior Jake Olsen gave the Argos a 6-0 lead.
A three from senior Davien Harris-Williams made it a 9-0 run but a pair of threes on the other end from the Fighting Saints (19-10) shortened the Argo lead to three.
Following a layup from Carroll, a fadeaway from Harris-Williams and threes from senior Jaylin Reed and Harris-Williams made it 17-10 seven minutes into the game.
Carroll would respond with an 8-0 run but an and one layup from Harris-Williams gave the Argos a 22-20 edge.
Each side would trade baskets until a logo three from Reed gave the Argos a 34-28 lead.
The Argos would maintain that advantage the rest of the half as Vining hit a jumper to keep the Argos ahead 48-41 going into the break. Harris-Williams led the way with 15 points in the first half.
Harris-Williams scored the first basket of the second half and on the next possession a layup from Reed increased the Argo lead to 11.
A 6-1 run from the Fighting Saints shortened the Argo lead to six but a pair of layups from Burton and an and one from Reed made it 60-47 seven minutes into the second half.Â
UP would make it 10 in a row after a three from Vining but a jumper from Carroll kept it a 14-point game.
Over the next five minutes the Fighting Saints slowly cut the Argo lead down to eight, but a jumper from Vining made it 69-59 with nine minutes remaining.
Over the next four minutes both sides would go basket for basket until four straight from the Argos increased the UP lead to 14.
Carroll College was able to go on a 17-3 run to shorten the Argo lead to two with just over thirty seconds remaining, and despite free throws from Reed, a buzzer beater three pointer from the Fighting Saints won the game for Carroll College 93-92.
