DILLON, Mont. – The University of Providence women's basketball program fell to Montana Western 73-67 Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (6-9) scored the first nine points of the game, but a three-pointer from junior Camryn Cartwright cut the lead to six midways through the first quarter.
The Argos (10-5) outscored Montana Western 7-2 the rest of the quarter behind baskets from senior Ashlee Maldonado and sophomore Monique Carter to cut the lead to two heading into the break.
The Bulldogs quickly extended their lead out to 10 to begin the second quarter but jumpers from Maldonado and junior McKenna Reggear shortened the Montana Western lead to 33-28 heading into halftime.
Both teams went back and forth to open the third quarter until seven straight points from the Argos behind jumpers from Maldonado and Carter cut the lead down to two.
Following a basket from the Bulldogs, a pair of free throws from sophomore Eliannah Ramirez and a jumper from Carter tied the game at 45 heading into the fourth.
The Argos took their first lead of the game off a three-pointer from sophomore Taliah Lee, but the Bulldogs would quickly answer to tie the game at 50.
Each side went back and forth until a pair of free throws from Maldonado put UP ahead by three with eight seconds left.
Montana Western would not go away hitting a three with two seconds remaining to send the game to overtime tied at 63.
The Bulldogs scored the first two baskets of overtime, and despite a late layup from Maldonado, the Argos fell to Montana Western 73-67 in overtime.
The Argos will be back in action Thursday, Jan. 16 when they host MSU-Northern. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center. Â
