GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's basketball program defeated #22 Carroll College 50-43 Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Saints (13-7) scored the first six points of the game, but the Argos (13-7) responded scoring six of the next eight points behind jumpers from sophomores Monique Carter and Eliannah Ramirez to bring the game withing two.
Both sides traded baskets for the rest of the quarter as UP went into the break trailing 13-10.
Carroll College opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to extend the Fighting Saints lead to six, and following a layup from sophomore Keanna Salave'a, another three from Carroll put the Fighting Saints ahead 22-16 midway through the quarter.
Carroll slowly extended their lead the rest of the second as UP went into halftime trailing 30-19.
The Argos scored four of the first five points of the third quarter to cut the lead back to eight, but a layup from Carroll made it 33-23 with just under six minutes left in the third.
UP responded closing the quarter on an 8-0 run behind a threes from Carter and Ramirez to make it a two-point game heading into the fourth quarter.
Maldonado started the fourth with a layup to tie the game at 33, and on the next possession, a pair of free throws from sophomore Taliah Lee gave the Argos their first lead of the game 35-33.
Both teams went back and forth over the next five minutes until seven straight behind two layups from Lee put the Argos in front 46-37 with 1:11 remaining.
Carroll was able to cut the lead to five late, but the Argos made their free throws down the stretch as UP defeated #22 Carroll College 50-43.
Taliah Lee led the way for the Argos with 16 points and Keanna Salave'a added 11 points and 14 rebounds.
The Argos will be back in action Thursday, Jan. 30 when they host Montana Western. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center.
