MAYVILLE, N.D -- The University of Providence men's basketball team defeated Mayville State 88-82 Friday night.
The Argos (2-12) scored the first five points of the game off a jumper from sophomore Anthony Hobbs and a three-pointer from senior Brendan Redhead and following a layup from the Comets (5-8), a pair of layups from junior Marcus Lawson and senior Jakub Lloyd put UP in front 10-2.
Over the next 10 minutes each side traded baskets until a 14-2 run from Mayville State put the Comets ahead 36-32.
Both teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the half as the Argos trailed 41-37 heading into the break.
The Comets opened up the scoring in the second half with a layup, but the Argos answered with baskets from Hobbs, Lloyd, and sophomore Quinn Swanson to tie the game at 43.
Mayville State quickly pushed the lead back out to four, but a 7-0 run from the Argos behind a three from Hobbs and a jumper from junior Preston Condie gave UP a 50-48 lead.
There would be four lead changes over the next five minutes until three-pointers from Redhead and junior Jermaine Rogers II pushed the Argo advantage to 68-64.
The Argos slowly pushed the lead out to nine behind a layup from Condie and free throws from Hobbs, and despite the Comets bringing the game within three late, UP secured the game at the free throw line defeating Mayville State 88-82.
Six Argos reached double-digit scoring with Redhead leading the way with 17 points, Hobbs added 15, Condie 14, Rogers II and Swanson tallied 12, and Lawson scored 10.
The Argos will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 3 when they head to Valley City, N.D. Tip-off is scheduled from 6:00 pm. (MST) versus Valley City State.
