GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's volleyball defeated Dakota State 3-1 Saturday afternoon.
In the first set the Trojans (9-8) jumped out to a 6-2 lead but the Argos (13-5) answered with a 7-3 stretch behind kills from seniors
Cabry Badley and
Martyna Fiedler to bring the set within one. Dakota State responded by pushing the lead out to five, and despite kills from juniors
Kendall Picolet and
Karolina Karabasz, the Trojans scored the final two points of the set to take the first 25-23.
In set two the Argos started early with kills from freshman
Bree MacDonald and Fiedler to take an 8-4 lead. Both teams traded points until UP took control with an 8-1 run off a pair of kills from Fiedler to put UP in front 23-13. Dakota State added a pair of points down the stretch but a block from Badley and sophomore
Trinity Tinsen secured the second for UP 25-15. Â
In the third set each side went back-and-forth with neither team gaining a lead by more than three until five straight from the Argos behind kills from MacDonald and Karabasz gave UP a 20-14 lead. Dakota State answered with a 6-1 run to bring the set with two, but the Argos scored the final two points of the set with a kill from Badley securing the third for UP 25-21.
In set four Dakota State scored seven of the first eight, but the Argos slowly cut into the lead with an ace from sophomore
Heather Barbee and a kill from MacDonald to shorten the Trojan advantage to 18-17. Dakota State scored two of the next three to go up 20-18, but the Argos ended the set with seven straight points with a kill from Picolet securing the fourth for UP 25-20, and the match 3-1.
Bree MacDonald and
Martyna Fiedler led the way with 11 kills apiece while
Karolina Karabasz and
Kendall Picolet added 10 kills each.
The Argos will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 7 when they host MSU-Northern in Great Falls at 7:00 p.m.
