Argos Split at Big Sky Challenge

BUTTE, Mont. – The University of Providence women's volleyball program split on day one of the Big Sky Challenge defeating IU South Bend 3-0 and falling to #23 LC State 3-1.

In the first set of the day both teams traded points until eight in a row from the Argos (4-1) behind a pair of kills from junior Addison Hinckley put UP in front 11-6. The Titans (3-2) responded to bring the set within one, but the Argos ended the set on a 10-2 run to secure the first set for UP 25-16.

In set two the Argos jumped out to an early 6-2 lead off a kill from senior Cabry Badley and an ace from senior Isabelle Cahall, but the Titans did not go away shortening the Argo lead to one. The Argos slowly pushed their lead back out to five, and despite a late flurry from the Titans, kills from freshman Brooklyn Hillman and Badley secured the second set for UP 25-19.

In the third set the Argos took control early with kills from senior Martyna Fiedler and sophomore Kya Stanley to put UP in front 13-8. The Argos cruised the rest of the way with a kill from Fiedler securing the third set for UP 25-17, and the match 3-0.

Cabry Badley led the way for the Argos with nine kills while Kya Stanley and Addison Hinckley added eight and seven kills, respectively.

In the second game of the day the Argos got out to an early 13-5 lead behind a pair of kills from Hinkley and an ace from Cahall, and despite the Warriors (4-0) bringing the set within six, the Argos rolled the rest of the way with a kill from freshman Bree MacDonald securing the first set for UP 25-14.

LC State turned the tables in the second set jumping out to a 9-4 lead, but the Argos answered with five straight off a pair of kills from Stanley to tie the set at nine. The Warriors slowly pushed their lead out to seven, and despite a kill from Badley, UP dropped the second set 25-16.

The Warriors continued their momentum into the third set scoring 13 of the first 17 points to take a 13-4 lead. The Argos did not go away with six straight of their own off a pair of kills from Hillman, but LC State stood strong down the stretch as the Argos fell in set three 25-20.

In the fourth set both teams went back-and-forth until a 5-1 stretch from the Warriors put LC State ahead 15-11. The Argos clawed back with a 6-1 run behind a pair of kills from MacDonald to bring the set within one, but the Warriors scored three of the last four points of the set as UP fell in set four 25-22, and the match 3-1.

The Argos will be back in action tomorrow, Aug. 22 when they face Ottawa University at 9:00 a.m. and Northwest University at 3:00 p.m. at the Big Sky Challenge.
