Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith is in his third year as an assistant coach for the University of Great Falls men’s basketball program.

Smith came to UGF from the University of Montevallo in Alabama. While at UMA, Smith coached Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, All-Region and Division II All-American Troran Brown. The Falcons won the Peach Belt West Division championship and reached the NCAA Division II Sweet 16.

Prior to his stint at UM, he an assistant coach at Wallace State Community College in Alabama. Smith was the lead recruiter for the states of Georgia, Virginia and Tennessee.

Smith returned to the United States in 2012 after a six-year professional basketball career overseas. Smith played in five different countries (Luxembourg, Iceland, New Zealand, Finland, and Australia), including multiple year stints in New Zealand and Australia. During the 2010 season, he was named Big V league MVP while averaging 30 ppg and 14 rpg for the Mildura Heat, and led the team to an undefeated season and league championship.

Along with being a player, Smith also served in a number of administrative roles with various international teams. He was a player/coach for West Auckland in the CBL and served as a Development Manager in the Mildura Heat organization and for Auckland Basketball. While playing for the North Harbor Heat, he worked as the Competitions Manager and Website Manager for the entire North Harbor Basketball organization. He was also the team captain for both Auckland and North Harbor.

Smith’s collegiate career started at the University of Texas El Paso where he was recruited and coached by Hall of Famer Don Haskins. After then becoming an NJCAA All-American at Coastal Georgia Community College, Smith played under Tony Ingle at Kennesaw State University and then transferred to Lee University.

While at Lee, Smith became a First Team All-American in 2005-06, averaging 21 ppg and 8.5 rpg while finishing in the top 5 in the NAIA in scoring, field goal percentage (58%), and free throw percentage (85%). Smith was named Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Year and led his team to a conference championship and 13th place finish in the NAIA Coaches Poll.

In high school, Smith played with NBA Champion Josh Powell at Riverdale High School in Riverdale, Ga. before transferring to Redemption Christian Academy in Troy, NY where he became a High School All-American.

Smith has a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts from Lee University with a minor in Religion, a master's degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine, and is currently working on a doctorate degree in Education in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in Higher Education Leadership from Grand Canyon University.

Kevin Smith is originally from Norfolk, Va. and is the nephew of NFL and College Football Hall of Famer Bruce Smith and his cousin, Alston Smith was an offensive lineman for Virginia Tech.
