Argos Wrestle Tough vs. MSU-Northern, Lose on Criteria

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The 16th ranked Argos proved made a good argument for them being a bit underrated this season, despite losing in their first home event of the season. UGF tied 5th ranked Montana State University-Northern 18-18 but lost based on criteria 19-18.

With both teams winning the same number of matches, and neither team winning by fall, the match came down to the third criteria, total match points from all ten weight classes, which MSUN won 73-66.

UGF got the better of Northern Lights in the lighter weight classes, taking three of the first four matches. The Argo's pre-season All-American Luke Schlosser earned four points with a 12-4 major decision win at 125. The fifth ranked wrestler was followed by the another top ten wrestler, sixth ranked sophomore, Clinton Garvin who won a 9-4 decision victory at 133.

15th ranked Kyle Leir won another decision for UGF 6-3 at 149 giving the Argos an early 10-3 lead over MSUN. Those early points were crucial as MSUN's roster got better as the weight classes got heavier.

The next two matches were split before the two teams. The Northern Lights earned three points with a decision win at 157 and then the Argos answered back with 11th ranked junior Kaldoon Rashid who continued to impress with a close 6-4 decision win at 165.

Then the strength of the Northern lineup took control. After MSUN's fifth ranked Willie Miller won a big four points in a 10-0 major decision, the Argos', Taylor Vaughn gave UGF a crucial performance. The ninth ranked wrestler at 184 dominated in a 19-4 technical fall victory (7:00), earning five points for his team and put UGF up 18-10 with two matches left.

After an 8-2 decision win for MSUN at 197, the Northern Lights needed a pin to win or a technical fall to tie in the final match. The bad news for UGF was that MSUN's 285 wrestler is Toby Cheff, who ranks second in the nation. Cheff proved his skill with a 16-1 technical decision (3:00).

The Argos will host another team ranked ahead of them in the preseason polls when they take on 13th ranked Southern Oregon University on November 20 at 7:30 p.m.
