FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Luke Schlosser rebounded from a tough previous weekend, Justin Harbison pinned (5) Ceron Francisco at 285 and the (T-10) Argos defeated (9) York (Neb.) at the National Duals. Loses to (1) Grand View (Iowa) and (8) Concordia (Neb.), however, knocked UGF out of the tournament without placing.Â
While the team highlight of the day was the Argo's 28-19 win over (9) York, the biggest moment of the tournament for UGF went to Harbison, a freshman who usually wrestles at 197, who won by Fall (5:24) against the fifth best heavyweight in the NAIA.
Harbison stepped up a weight class in the day's final two matches after Andreas Geranios, the Argo's usual heavyweight, got injured. His main roll was to simply keep UGF from a forfeiture, which would cost the team six points. After losing by Fall (3:36) to (3) Dean Broghammer in UGF's dual against Grand View, the freshman's next task wasn't much easier.
Against Francisco, Harbison could have justifiably wrestled in a way that simply tried to avoid a fall or technical fall. Instead, he competed aggressively and managed to pin the much bigger opponent for one of the tournament's biggest upsets.
The win was the final match of the day for UGF, putting an end to the tournament and the team's 28-19 loss to Concordia.
While the day finished with a team loss, it began with a 28-19 win over (9) York and a strong start to the tournament for (3) Schlosser. The senior had a rough go at the Menlo Duals the previous weekend, losing twice to the seventh ranked 125 wrestler in the NAIA, but began a strong National Duals with a 9-1 major decision against (15) Robert Ozuna.
Junior (7) Taylor Vaughn also got off to a hot start against York, defeating (15) Nicholas Meck by Fall (1:21).
Grand View proved a much more difficult task for Great Falls. The Argos lost 54-3 to the top ranked team in the nation. Schlosser was the lone victor for UGF in that match, but his victory was a significant 2-1 decision over (6) Tristan Bundy.
UGF faired better against Concordia, even before Harbison's big upset. Schlosser finished off the day undefeated with a with a 5-0 decision and two other Argos defeating ranked wrestlers.
The first wrestler to do so was junior (6) Khaldoon Rashid, who won a tight 4-3 decision over (11) Tommy Bailey. The second was Vaughn, who won his second match of the day with a 12-3 major decision over (6) Matthew Atwood.
The two loses knock the Argos out of the dual tournament which will conclude the following day. The next test for UGF will be a dual against North Idaho College on Saturday, Jan. 16 in Missoula, Mont., starting at 3 p.m.
