GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Argo soccer got off to a strong start on its final weekend of the regular season, defeating Walla Walla University 8-0 at home. Those 8 goals were scored by seven different players, including the first career goal for redshirt-sophomore
John Martindale.
Things got started off quickly for UGF with sophomore midfielder
Adrian Gomez gathering a deflection off of the Wolves' keeper to score on an open net in the 8th minute.
The Argos then quickly stole the ensuing kickoff, sent a lob over the WWU defense, and found freshman
George Holloway for a one-on-one with the keeper. As the keeper charged, Holloway flicked the bouncing ball over the keeper and into the net just 10 seconds after the previous score.
Things would continue much that same way for the rest of the half, with UGF outshooting the Wolves 21-0 in the period. It was just another seven minutes before another UGF shot became a goal. Once again it was a UGF forward breaking free for a one-on-one chance. This time at was junior
Christoffer Bisbo, off of a second assist from fellow forward
Christopher Chavez.
Senior midfielder got his second assist of the game in 20th minute when his free kick from the right side of the field sailed across the penalty box and found the head of senior defender
Sam Howard.
Two more goals came before the half ended, the first of which was Gomez's second of the game and the second was a goal from redshirt-freshman
Cole Myers in the 40th minute. UGF went into the half up 6-0 and started the second period with a less experienced lineup.
It didn't take long for the backups to get on the board. In the 58th minute sophomore midfielder
Luis Macias scored his first goal of the season with an unassisted effort down the right sideline.
In the 64th minute, the Wolves got off their first shot of the game, putting the effort on frame. Redshirt-junior
Tom Chesterman was in place to make the save though, his second of the season.
A foul on Walla Walla in the 76th minute set up a UGF penalty kick. Stepping forward to take it was redshirt-sophomore
John Martindale, getting minutes in a game for just the third time this season. The outside back looked like a season veteran, beating the keeper with a shot to the right side of the net for his first career goal.
UGF outshot WWU 35-1 in the game, although Walla Walla's keeper played a valiant game with 11 saves.
