BUTTE, Mont. - The second and final day of the Big Sky Challenge ended well for Lady Argos volleyball, with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 17-25, 25-11) win over Evergreen State College to finish 3-1 in the tournament. UGF still showed a tendency for inconsistent play, dropping a rather inexplicable third set, but also looked downright dominant at times as well.
The first of those dominant moments came during the final 9 points of the first set. ESC got off to a hot start before the set became a back-and-forth battle resulting in an 18-18 tie. UGF scored 7 of the next 9 points. The team's last two points came off of kills from sophomore outside hitter
Tymerie Vincelli who had her best match of the tournament. Vincelli had 6 of her 10 total kills in that first set.
A Vincelli kill spurred the next major UGF rally which came in the 2nd set with the score tied at 16. Kills from her, senior outside hitter
Madison Wilhelm, and senior middle blocker
Tiffany Marks highlighted a run of five straight Lady Argo points and put the set out of reach for the Geoducks.
Things slipped away in the third set. UGF's otherwise efficient offense hit -0.136 on its way to an unexpected 25-17 loss.
Outside of that third set, the Lady Argos hit extremely well, led by senior outside hitter
Madison Wilhelm, senior middle blocker
Tiffany Marks, and sophomore outside hitter
Tymerie Vincelli. The three combined for 39 kills and just 12 errors. UGF as a team hit for a percentage of 0.311.
That strong offense returned in the fourth set. Instead of a few spurts of excellent play, the Lady Argos put a full set of focused execution together. With an offense that hit for 12 kills in 20 attempts and a defense that held ESC to a negative hitting percentage, the Lady Argos made quick work of the Geoducks to finish off the match.
Vincelli's 10 kills, 10 digs, and 2 services aces were all career highs for the sophomore and earned her the second most points on the team. Leading UGF in points was Wilhelm who finished with 19 points off of 18 kills and 2 block assists.
Senior libero
Kennedy Chadwick also put in a strong defensive effort with a team-leading 17 digs and even earning a points with her second kill of the year.
The win brings the Lady Argos to a .500 record for the first time this season with 4 wins and 4 losses. Next, UGF will travel to the Bellevue University Tournament where they will take on four teams including #5 Hastings College (Neb.).
