McLaughlin Scores First Goal in Lady Argo Loss to Knights

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - A shot that rang off the post in the first few seconds of the game for UGF's Eme McLaughlin could've changed everything, but it didn't go in and the Lady Argos lost to Warner Pacific College 3-1.

UGF's talented freshman started the game with one of her best looks at net of the season, driving from the wing to the left post with just the goalkeeper in front of her only 18 seconds in. McLaughlin tried to chip the oncoming keeper and shot was just a foot off from scoring, clanging off the near post.

That should almost set a thrilling tone for the Lady Argos, but instead in woke up the Knights. The next 15 minutes were a fatal for UGF, starting with a set piece in the 3rd minute. At the 2:06 mark, at Great Falls foul set WPC up with a free kick about 30 yards out and Warner Pacific made the most of it, firing the ball past Lady Argo goalkeeper Kyra Dorvall.

Nine minutes later, the Knights star freshman Ashley Giesbers struck for the first time, dribbling through the Lady Argo defense, horizontally across the six yard box and fired a shot past Dorvall.

WPC continued to attack for the rest of the half, but UGF settled down and weather the storm for the next 34 minutes to go into the half down 2-0.

Once again, UGF started the half with an early scoring chance, earning a corner in the 57th minute. McLaughlin also managed to get off a shot a few minutes later.

Then, in the 56th minute, Giesbers got loose again. She slipped through the defense to get one-on-one with Dorvall only this time UGF's redshirt junior made strong save to keep the score within two.

Giesber's would get her revenge in the 63rd minute, scoring her second of the game to make the score 3-0.

UGF answered back 12 minutes later with McLaughlin finally scoring her first goal in collegiate play, sidestepping the WPC keeper and finishing on an open net in the 76th minute. She got the ball from a wonderful long cross from the far sideling by senior Ashley Klepac. By that point, however, it was too little too late for UGF.

The Lady Argos created a few more quality looks including a header inside the box from junior Alejandra Guzman, but could bring the score any closer. UGF also escaped another one-on-one from Giesbers with a save from Dorvall that was even better than the first.

UGF drops to 0-7 (0-4) with the loss and will look for its first win of the season on September 30 on the road against Rocky Mountain College at 3 p.m. The two teams already played in Great Falls, Mont., earlier this year, with RMC winning a close contest 3-2.
