BILLINGS, Mont. – A one-time strike from sophomore
Malena Lennon gave UGF women's soccer its first win of the season, beating Rocky Mountain College 1-0. The win ends a 7-game losing streak for the Lady Argos, and avenges a 3-2 loss to Rocky earlier in the season.
Lennon's goal came in the 85th minute off of a one-time strike just instead the penalty box that hung close to the ground and curled around the RMC keeper right inside the near post. The pass came from freshman
Sydney Kellar. The play was Lennon's first goal of the season and Kellar's first assist as a collegiate player.
Before that last minute winner, the game was controlled by Rocky with occasional counterattack threats from the Lady Argos. The Battlin' Bears out possessed UGF and outshot UGF 12-2.
Keeping the zero in the goal column intact was redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Kyra Dorvall. Dorvall ended the game with 6 saves including a crucial diving effort on an RMC breakaway just seconds after Lennon's goal.
Outside of that particular chance, most of Rocky's shots were from long distance, either sailing over the night or rather harmlessly into the arms of Dorvall.
Besides Lennon, freshman forward
Eme McLaughlin came the closest to scoring for UGF. McLaughlin, who scored her first collegiate goal in the Lady Argo's previous game, broke free down the left wing in the 17th minute, carrying the ball into the penalty box and driving toward the near post when her shot was tipped by the RMC keeper and the ball rolled just wide of the far post.
UGF's first win of the season brings the team to 1-7 (1-4) on the year. The Lady Argos will look for a second straight win against College of Idaho on October 2 at 2:30 p.m. in Caldwell, Idaho.
