HAVRE, Mont. – Points in the paint for the University of Great Falls went up against 3-point shooting for Montana State University – Northern and in the end MSUN's shooting won out in a 73-62 Argo loss. UGF outscored the Lights 34-22 in the key, but the Lights hit 10 threes.
For the second straight game, UGF fell behind early with MSUN scoring the first three field goals of the game. Northern continued to control play, extending the lead to 18-7 after 14 minutes of play.
Six straight points from junior Tymarieh Dixon brought that deficit down to 5 within the next minute and a half. Dixon also added steal during that run, forcing what would be 1 of 3 turnovers from the Lights in the final four minutes.
Thanks in part to those turnovers, the Argos recovered from their slow start to bring the score within one bucket before the end of the first half. Dixon was the dominant scorer for UGF in the opening period, scoring 12 of the team's 22 points.
In the first four minutes of the second half, MSUN made four 3-point field goals. That barrage from outside the arc was only broken up by one driving layup from Dixon. That layup brought the forward's point total to 14, but it was also the last time he would score in the game.
By the end of the Light's opening salvo, the Argos were down by 15. A few more threes later in the half extended that margin to 21, a margin from which they could never really recovered.
In the absence of Dixon, UGF's leading scorer on the season, Matthew Brooks-McGregor stepped up. The junior scored 10 of his 16 total points in the final 10 minute of play as the Argos slowly narrowed Northern's lead. The closest UGF got was a 10-point margin with 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Brooks-McGergor's 16 and Dixon's 14 combined for almost half of UGF's 62 points. The other half came from a combination of eight different Argo players who all scored 8 to 2 points.
Junior forward Treyvon Bashir continued to crank out his consistently effective numbers, finishing the game with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
The loss brings UGF's losses even with its wins as the team's record now stands at 10-10 (2-7). Next up for the Argos will be (13) Carroll College at home on January, 28 at 7:30 p.m.
