GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Argo basketball ran into a buzz saw on senior night. Coming off of an encouraging 75-71 win over Rocky Mountain College the night before, where UGF's seniors came through in a big way, the Argos just didn't have it offensively and what they lost, (13) Montana Western found. The Bulldogs made 19 3-pointers in a 108-63 UGF loss.
The first points of the game were scored by Western, but Argo senior forward Isaac Howard responded with a made three to put UGF up 3-2. That would be UGF only lead of the game and Howards three would be UGF's only points until five minutes into the first half.
By the time junior guard Matthew Brooks-McGregor hit another three at the 14:53 mark, the Bulldogs already had a double-digit lead. 15 minutes and UMW 3-pointers later, the half was over and the Argos trailed 56-34.
The two bright spots for UGF in the first half was senior starter John Makkar and freshman reserve, Kevin Schilling Jr. The former was an effective offensive presence in the post, using his physicality to score 6 points and block 1 shot in the first half. The latter came off the bench to hit two 3-pointers and a nifty drive to bucket to lead UGF in scoring with 8 points at the half.
Despite shooting 57 percent from three in the first half, Western somehow found a way to be even better in the second. The Bulldogs made 11 of 16 attempts from distance, to finish with 19 on the night.
Makkar did his best to answer, scoring 10 more points to set a new season high of 16. Trading his twos for Western's threes wasn't enough, however, and neither was 6 more points from Schilling. The redshirt-freshman finished with a career high 14 points and 2 steals in 15 minutes of play.
The loss ends UGF regular season, but the season as a whole. The Argos will travel to Lewiston, Idaho as the 6-seed in the Frontier Conference Playoffs to face the 3-seed Lewis-Clark State College at 6 p.m. MT on Wednesday, March 1. UGF finished the regular season with a record of 12-17 (4-14).
