ASHLAND, Ore. – A late-inning Raider rally in Game 1 of a doubleheader between UGF softball and conference foe Southern Oregon, broke the early momentum built by UGF softball and turned the series into two losses for the Lady Argos. The 7-run rally came in the bottom of the sixth, with UGF leading 4-0 and handed UGF a 7-4 Game 1 loss. SOU's pitcher then shutdown the UGF bats in a 5-2 Lady Argo loss in Game 2.
Senior
Morgan Robinson started the day with a leadoff single for the Lady Argos on the game's first pitch. UGF continued to swing on early pitches and a single from senior
Hali Gruntowicz with a 1-0 count brought Robinson home for the first run of the series.
As good as Robinson's first swing was, senior
Jocelyn Kaufman's was even better. The catcher led off the second inning with her first home run of the season and second of her career.
Junior
Gabrielle Canibeyaz single in the next at bat and from there the Lady Argos played small ball to work her around the bases. The process started with a bunt from junior
Makaylee Jaussi and after the next two batters struck out, junior
Kylie Gonzales singled up the middle to bring Canibeyaz home.
At that point, UGF led 3-0 and that lead expanded to 4 runs in the top of the fourth. Once again, the run started with a leadoff single, this time from Jaussi. She advanced to second on a ground out to first, and then junior
Bailey Henderson brought her home with a single to left.
Redshirt-freshman
Mikayla Deigan held the Raiders scoreless through the first five innings, but six innings proved to be one too many. The inning seemed more about the Raider's batters than the UGF pitchers, as the Lady Argos put three different players in the circle all with similar results.
SOU finished the inning with 8 hits, including 4 doubles and 1 triple to score a whopping 7 runs and take Game 1 7-0.
The crushing late loss seemed to take the wind out of the Lady Argo's sails through the first few innings of Game 2. UGF managed just 1 hit in the first three innings, and during that time the Raiders scored twice.
Not only did UGF show signs of life in the top of the fourth, they managed to tie up the game.
It was another leadoff, but this time a double from Henderson that got things going. She advanced to third off a sacrifice fly and then Gonzales came through again with a single to right. Deigan followed with a single to center that brought Gonzales home all the way from first to tie the game at 2-2.
That lead didn't last long, however, with SOU answering back with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Raiders then scored two more in the next inning to take a 5-2 lead that would stand for the rest of the game.
The losses put UGF's record at 8-4 (1-4) on the year with another doubleheader against SOU the following day. Those games will be played at Noon at 2 p.m. MT.
