VANCOUVER, B.C. – There just wasn't enough offensive output from the Lady Argo softball bats against the University of British Columbia (3-16, 3-9). Despite two games worth of good pitcher, UGF dropped both games of a doubleheader against UBC, 2-1 & 3-1.
The losses barely change UGF's place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings, going from a two-way tie for seventh to a three-way tie for seventh, but it puts the team five games behind the crucial sixth place.
Both games played out with a similar storyline, and first five innings of Game 1 set a clear tone for the day. With the exception of two Thunderbird errors, no Lady Argo reached base safely in 17 attempts.
That changed in the top of the sixth, when junior
Kylie Gonzales hit a single up the middle to end a no-hit bid from UBC's Zoe Gillis. The next batter was senior
Hali Gruntowicz who came through when her team needed it, hitting a line drive down the left field line to bring home junior
Bailey Henderson who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning.
Up to that point, UGF's pitching and defense was up to Gillis's challenge. While the Lady Argo defense committed 3 errors and UGF's starting pitcher
Shelby Abeyta gave up at least 1 hit in the first four innings, no Thunderbird crossed the plate before Henderson made the game 1-0 UGF.
Part way through the bottom of the fifth, Abeyta got a rest and junior
Kristina George came in to finish the game. George entered the day with 4 saves on the year, ranking second in the NAIA.
She wouldn't get save number five, thanks to a 2-run home run in the bottom of the sixth which accounted for the final score, a 2-1 UBC win.
Game 2 also featured 1 UGF run, a solid Lady Argo pitching performance, and a UBC home run. Those combined for a similar result, only this time UGF never led.
The Lady Argos fared better at the plate in Game 2, getting 7 hits to the 2 hits from Game 1, but all those extra baserunners didn't lead to any more runs. The one score UGF did manage came from senior catcher
Jocelyn Kaufman who singled to left to bring in fellow senior
Morgan Robinson.
Once again, it was a home run that doomed the Lady Argos. This time it was a 2 RBI knock to right center that extended a 1-0 UBC lead and put the game out of reach for UGF.
Redshirt-freshman
Mikayla Deigan only allowed 2 earned runs in a complete game performance.
While she didn't score or drive in a run, Gonzales had a monster game at the plate, hitting a perfect 3-3. She ended the day 4-6 in the two games.
