PORTLAND, Ore. – Argo soccer's conference opener couldn't have been much better. In its first Cascade Collegiate Conference game of the season, UP won its road match against Multnomah University 7-0, controlling play throughout the match. The Argos led by 4-0 at the half and 5 different members of the team came away with goals.
It wasn't a surprising result, with the Argos having made the CCC Tournament Championship in each of the last two years while the Lions are 2-24 in that same span of time. That being said the last time the two teams met, the score was closer than expected at 3-1 Argos.
This time around, UP made sure it wasn't that close and it didn't take long for the team to score the game's first point. It was two senior forwards, and two players named Chris, that combined in the 11th minute to make the game 1-0 Argos. The pass came from
Christoffer Bisbo and found
Christopher Chavez who scored on a shot from 20 yards out.
Seven minutes later, Bisbo got a goal of his own, getting his head on a cross from freshman
George Almeida who got the first assist of his career.
Things quieted down for a bit after that and the Lions were able to force junior
Marc Girones into making a save, but after the 30th minute, the Argos turned up the heat again. In the 34th minute Chavez struck again. This time his goal was off a header from a thrown-ins by redshirt-sophomore
Cole Myers who specializes in long throw-ins.
Myers reared back for another long throw into the penalty box in the 38th minute and this one made it to junior midfielder
Luis Macias who was able to get a foot on it to bring the score to 4-0 before the end of the first half.
The second half was a little more even in terms of play than the first half. After the Argos outshot the Lions 10-3 in the first half, the second half numbers were 8-5 in UP's favor. The difference was the quality of those shots, as three of the Argo's chances found the back of the net and three more required a save, while only one of MU's efforts were on goal.
Sophomore forward
George Holloway was the star of the second half for the Argos. In the 65th minute, the center forward caught Multnomah's goalkeeper coming too far forward and managed a 25-yard chip into the open net. That effort was assisted by freshman
Kevin Vasquez-Hernandez for his first career assists.
Holloway again got his name on the scoresheet 12 minutes later, this time slotting a pass from Almeida into the right corner of the net from 12 yards out.
In the 84th minute, Almeida finally got a goal of his own after assisting on two others. His score was a result of a corner kick from freshman
Paulo Leonardo that was flicked on by Holloway and finished by Almeida.
Over the past two games, Almeida has 2 goals and 2 assists which ties him with Chavez for the team lead in total points.
UP is now 2-1 (1-0) on the season and will next play Walla Walla University on Saturday, September 16 at 9:30 p.m. MST. The Argos are 8-0 all-time against the Wolves.
