GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's basketball team battled with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns to earn their second win of the season, 88-77.
Austin Starr and
Brandon Cotton both had a balanced effort in the win as they led the Argos offensively with 23 points each. Cotton also collected five rebounds, two assists, and a steal, while Starr collected four rebounds, three steals, and dished out three assists.
Jaxen Hashley was the only Argo with a double-double, scoring 13 points and garnering 11 rebounds and stealing the ball twice.
The Argos led for most of the opening 10 minutes as basket from
Deontae Woodbridge gave the Argos a seven-point lead, 16-9, but the Pronghorns responded to tie the game up at 16 and then again at 19. The Pronghorns would outscore the Argos four to two to take their first lead since the opening basket, 23-21, but a three from
Brandon Cotton gave the advantage back to the Argos, 24-23. Cotton's three sparked a 12-2 Argos run to give Providence their first double-digit lead of the game, 36-25. The Argos maintained their double-digit advantage as they ended the first half up by 17, 48-31.
The Pronghorns made the first shot of the second half, 48-33, but the Argos continued to lay it on as they took a 20-point lead following a layup from
Jalen Shepard, 53-33. The Argos eventually pushed their lead to 27 following a three from Cotton, 62-35. The Pronghorns rallied through the next five minutes of clock to bring the game back under 20, 69-51. Lethbridge continued to fight as they outscored the Argos 22-11 to bring the game back to a single-digit lead, 80-73. Cotton responded with a three to push the lead back to 10, 83-73, and the Argos didn't look back as they would maintain their lead to eventually close out the 11-point victory, 88-77.
