GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Knocking off their second top-15 team of the season, No. T-18 women's basketball remained unbeaten on Friday as they downed No. 8 Westmont College, 75-70.
Emilee Maldonado led the Argos offensively as she netted 21 points, while also dishing out five assists and hauling in four rebounds.
Parker Esary and
Tristan Murphy both garnered double-doubles as they scored 15 and 10 points, while also collecting 10 rebounds each, respectively.
Reed Hazard also had a phenomenal game as she notched a career-high 15 points, three boards, and two assists in the win.
The opening period was a battle on both sides of the ball that lead to eight lead changes and six stalemates before a Warrior three and two free throws from Maldonado ended the first to a one-point Warrior advantage, 19-18.
The first five minutes of the second period proved to be identical to the first as the Argos battled the Warriors through eight lead changes before two free throws from Maldonado put the Argos up by one with 3:11 on the clock, 32-31.
Jenna Randich knocked down a long-range three to give the Argos their largest lead of the match this far, 35-31. The Warriors responded to get within one, 37-36, but a Maldonado layup sent the teams to the break with the Argos in the lead by three, 39-36.
The Argos opened the third with a layup from Esary to take a five-point lead, 41-36. The Argos and Warriors would notch two each before Esary nailed another layup with 6:14 on the clock to put the Argos up by seven, 45-38. The Warriors battled back as they netted a three with less than three minutes to play to tie up the game at 49. Both teams would notch two to push the game to 51 all, but the Warriors went on a 4-0 run to close out the period, 55-51.
The Argos dominated in the fourth period as Providence responded with seven straight points and held the Warriors scoreless over four minutes of play to open the fourth period and take a three-point lead, 58-55. Following the lead change, the Argos wouldn't relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. The Argos continued to lay it on as they continued to outscore Westmont, 6-2, to push their lead back to seven, 64-57. One more 6-4 run gave their largest lead of the match and a nine-point advantage with slightly more than one minute to play. The Warriors attempted to rally as they would outscore the Argos 9-5 over 1:01 of game clock, but it was too little too late as the Argos would take the upset victory, 75-70.
