Lady Argos Continue to Hit Well in Two Losses to Minot

MINOT, N.D. – Hitting continued to be a major strength for University of Providence softball on Day 3 of the Bubble Invite, but the team's pitching and defense weren't as sharp in two losses to hosting institution Minot State University. UP's offense averaged 6 runs a game against the NCAA Division II opponent, but an average of 11.

Game 1 was the closer of the two, with the Lady Argos finishing 1 run short in an 8-7 loss, while Game 2 was a bigger struggle with a final score of 14-5. The games mark the end of non-conference play for the Lady Argos. UP will enter Cascade Collegiate Conference play with a record of 2-3.

GAME 1

Key Moments:
  • Red hot hitter Karly Southworth (SO/Lewiston, Mont.) continued her offensive onslaught with a single to right to lead off the top of the second. She then got into scoring position with her first career stolen base. Two batters later, catcher Bailey Henderson (SR/Fernley, Nev.) brought Southworth home score the game's first run. A single from second baseman Gabrielle Canibeyaz (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) then brought Henderson and shortstop Samantha Hernandez (FR/Los Angeles, Calif.) around for a 3-0 Lady Argo lead.
  • An error from Hernandez in the bottom of the second ended up costing UP 5 runs. The play came with 1 out already on the board, and a properly played fielder's choice would have brought that total to 2. A Minot runner scored on the play, but the next batter grounded out which should have ended the inning, but without the previous out, the Beavers ended up scoring 4 more runs to take a 5-3 lead.
  • Trailing 7-3 in the top of the fourth, a huge double from third baseman Briauna Carter (JR/Kearns, Utah) put the Lady Argos right back into the game. Her knock to center field with 2 outs and bases loaded drove in 3 runs and brought UP within 1 run.
  • Carter completed the comeback with an RBI groundout to first in the top of the sixth. She drove in Henderson who had reached base for the fourth time in the game off of a leadoff single.
  • Minot took the lead back for good in the bottom of the sixth, with an RBI groundout of their own.

At the Plate:
  • Henderson was a leadoff machine in the game. She reached base safely 4 times with 3 singles and a walk. Her efforts had her account for 4 of UP's 7 runs with 1 RBI and 3 runs.
  • One of the main reasons Henderson got home so often was that the number two batter, Canibeyaz, also had a big game. She went 3-4 with 2 RBI and 1 run.
  • Carter only had 1 hit in the game in 4 trips to the plate, but that one hit was her second double of the year and helped her drive in 4 of the team's 7 runs.
  • Moving up the batting order didn't change Southworth's trend of success.  She went 2-3 from the plate with 1 run.
  • In terms of hits, UP's offense was the more effective of the two, outhitting Minot 11-8.

In the Circle:
  • Kristina George suffered her first loss of the season, though based on earned runs she should have had her third win. Of the 8 runs she allowed, only 3 were earned. She struck out 4 while earning her third complete game of the season.

GAME 2

Key Moments:
  • Kylie Gonzalez's (SR/Hubbard, Ore.) first home run of the season was the highlight of the game for UP. It came in the bottom of the first and drove in Canibeyaz who had reached base on a fielding error. The homer gave the Lady Argos a 2-1 lead, the team's only lead of the game.
  • Minot retook the lead with 3 runs in the top of the second, but it was a 7-run third inning that truly sunk the Lady Argos. UP had 3 errors in the inning and starting pitcher Ashton Bell (JR/Castle Dale, Utah) was eventually replaced. By the end of the inning, Minot was ahead 11-2 and the Lady Argos never recovered.

At the Plate:
  • The home run from Gonzalez was the senior's only hit, but it accounted for 2 of the team's 5 runs.
  • Henderson continued to be an effective leadoff hitting, going 2-4 with 1 RBI.
  • For the fourth straight game, Southworth hit .500 or better, going 1-2 with 1 run and a walk.

In the Circle:
  • Bell got the start for the Lady Argos, after being UP's best pitcher not named George the day before. She had a rough outing that wasn't helped by field errors, allowing 11 runs, including 9 earned runs.
  • After 2.1 innings, KJ Schweikert (FR/Columbia Falls, Mont.) came in to relieve Bell and settled things down a bit. In 3.2 innings, she allowed 8 hits but only 3 runs.

Other Notes:
  • In five games against NCAA DII schools over the course of three days, the Lady Argos went 2-3 with an offense averaging over 5 runs a game.
  • UP is 2-1 with George pitching, allowing an average of 3.3 runs per game, and 0-2 with another pitcher, letting up 12.5 runs per game.

UP Next:
Conference play will begin for the Lady Argos on March 2 with a doubleheader against Carroll College at 1/3 p.m.
