KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – A bad day in every way led University of Providence softball to two losses that went less than seven innings against (22) Oregon Tech. Game 1 was the shorter of the two contests and also the more lopsided, with OIT winning 17-0 (five innings). Game 2 went six innings and finished with a 9-0 final score.
The losses bring UP's season record to 7-27 (5-18) with three doubleheaders left in the regular season.
GAME 1
Key Moments:
- From the start of the game, the strain of pitching 11 innings in the previous day's doubleheader seemed to take its toll on UP's starting pitcher Kristina George (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah). OIT's first four batters double to right field, fouled out to third, doubled to left center, and then homered to left field. That made the score 3-0 and the Lady Argos never recovered.
- The only bright spot for UP was a single for Hanna Tarum (SO/Great Falls, Mont.) in the top of the fourth. That hit ended a no-hit bid for OIT's starting pitcher.
- UP's only other base runner in the game was Samantha Hernandez (FR/Los Angeles, Calif.) who walked in the top of the third.
GAME 2
Key Moments:
- Any no-hit bid was ended early this time by the Lady Argos with Hernandez hitting a single down the right field line. She ended up being one of three UP runners left stranded in the game.
- Once again, the bottom of the first didn't go well for UP. The Owls drew 3 walks and a hit-by-pitch while tallied 3 hits in the inning drive in 4 runs.
- UP's starting pitcher Ashton Bell (JR/Castle Dale, Utah) settled down for the next four innings, allowing just 1 run.
- The bottom of the sixth in when the 8-run mercy rule came into play with an OIT homer to left drove in 3 runs to put the score at 9-0.
At the Plate:
- Hernandez was by far the team's best batter on the day, going 2-3 in Game 2. She accounted for 2 of the team's 3 total hits.
- UP's other hit came from senior Bailey Henderson (SR/Fernley, Nev.).
