KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – University of Providence softball put up a good fight against (22) Oregon Tech in Game 1 of a doubleheader losing 5-2 but lost 8-0 in 5 innings in a Game 2 loss. The doubleheader was the first of three straight doubleheaders, the first two of which will be against OIT.
The Lady Argos stay in eighth place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings with a record of 7-25 (5-17).
GAME 1
Key Moments:
- UP entered the top of the third inning trailing 1-0. The first batter struck out swinging, bringing Ashton Bell (JR/Castle Dale, Utah) to the plate. She showcased hitting power that had been absent previously, belting her first home run as an Argo to even up the runs tally.
- That tie score was short-lived as OIT scored three runs in the bottom of the third, including a 2 RBI homer.
- The next run for the Lady Argos came in the top of the sixth. Kylie Gonzales (SR/Hubbard, Ore.) lead off the inning by reaching first on an error. UP failed to advance her on the next 2 at bats, but a double from Karsten Williams (JR/Sandy, Utah) brought Gonzales home. UP wouldn't manage another run by the end of the seventh.
At the Plate:
- While the Lady Argos managed 7 total hits in the game, only one player had more than one. That player was Samantha Hernandez (FR/Los Angeles, Calif.) who went 2-3.
- Williams and Bell combined for the team's only 2 RBIs
In the Circle:
- Kristina George (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) managed 5 strikeouts in the game, and didn't walk anyone, but did give up 11 hits.
GAME 2
Key Moments:
- OIT took the lead with a 2 run bottom of the third that included 3 hits and 2 doubles.
- The game got out of hand in the bottom of the fifth. The inning started with OIT ahead 3-0 but they added another 5 runs in the fifth to force the 5-inning mercy rule.
At the Plate:
- If not for a single from Williams, the Lady Argos would have been no-hit in the game. Her single and a walk from Bailey Henderson (SR/Fernley, Nev.) created the only 2 baserunners for UP in the game.
In the Circle:
- George also started Game 2, pitching 4 of the 5 innings. She allowed the first 3 runs before KJ Schweikert (FR/Columbia Falls, Mont.) came in in the fifth.
WHAT'S NEXT:
UP will play a second doubleheader against Oregon Tech on April 21 in Klamath Falls, Oregon with game times at Noon and 2 p.m. MST.
