GREAT FALLS, Mont. – University of Providence lacrosse has tapped into the top club team in the state of Washington and stolen a recruit from one of the best MCLA DI programs with the signing of middie TJ Banks. Banks originally committed to two-time national champion Grand Canyon University, but switched the decision and will play for the Argos in 2018-19.
"Coach Boekel had given me an opportunity to play collegiate lacrosse for a very affordable price, which is a blessing I have wished for since I started playing," Banks said. "My goals are to get an education, have fun, and play the best lacrosse that I can."
In high school, the 5-10 midfielder played for Cutis High School in University Place, Washington, and the Seattle Starz club team. The Starz are one of the premier club team in the northwest, with alumni playing at NCAA DI powerhouses such as Syracuse University and University of Denver. So far in 2018, ten Starz players have committed to play for a collegiate program.
"TJ embodies everything that I value in a player; a solid work ethic, persistence, boundless energy, integrity, and a positive, team-oriented perspective," Starz Coach and Managing Director Rick Shwartz said. "His drive and desire combined with his pure athletic ability provide the foundation for TJ to be a huge impact player."
During his senior season with Curtis High School, Banks tallied 12 goals, 20 assists, and 45 groundballs. He earned three varsity letters with the Vikings and was a team captain as a junior and senior. Along with athletic awards and being a two-way football player, Banks also earned the Service Award for putting in 80 hours of extra volunteer work on top of the 5 hours required of freshmen at Curtis.
The signing of Banks brings UP's 2018 Recruiting Class to 11 signed members.
