OMAHA, Neb. – The Argos closed play at the GoSparpy.com Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Nebraska following two more wins on day two to finish with a 4-0 record, winning seven in a row and improving to 7-1 on the season.
University of Providence 3 – William Woods 1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17)
The opening set with the Argos trading runs with the Owls to an 8-8 tie game. Two errors from the Owls, a service and attack error, sparked a 9-3 run to give Providence a 17-11 advantage. William Woods responded with a 5-0 run to close the gap to one, but the Argos quickly dashed their hopes as a kill and service ace from
Kelsey Shaver ignited the offense to close out the game with an 8-1 run to claim the first set, 25-17.
William Woods took the lead early in the second set, however the Argos responded with a 7-1 run to take the 10-6 lead. The Owls countered with another run, this time putting them up by four, 15-11. The Owls and the Argos then traded points, but the Owls tallied an extra point to push the lead to five, 20-15. Providence tried to overcome the deficit, but it was just slightly out of reach as the Owls tied up the match after taking the set, 25-22.
Set three began in the Argos favor as a 4-1 run put the Argos on top. William Woods tallied a few points of their own to eventually put the game at a 5-5 tie. The two squads battled back and forth, while the Argos bounced between a four and two-point lead, until an 8-3 run gave the Argos their largest lead of the set, 21-15. The Owls tried to cut the deficit as they got four in a row, but the Argos were able to put the set away after a final 4-2 run closed out the se, 25-21.
The Argos looked to shut the door on William Woods as they began the fourth set in explosive fashion, scoring 10 points to take a 10-0 lead. Providence padded their lead as they battled with the Owls to 23-10. Desperate to diminish the deficit, William Woods put together a 7-0 run to bring the game within six, but the Argos tallied on the two more that they needed to take the the final set, 25-17.
Junior
Kelsey Shaver collected a double-double as she knocked down an impressive 19 kills, while also contributing defensively with 11 digs. Junior
Lauren Brown had an excellent match as well, hitting for .405 and garnering 17 kills. Senior
Paige Jensen tallied 44 assists and junior
Averi Dyer led both teams with 19 digs.
University of Providence 3 – Peru State 0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18)
Game two opened with a 6-2 Bobcat advantage, however it was short-lived as the Argos turned on the heat to tally 9-straight points to take the lead, 11-6. Peru State eventually brought the match back within one, 17-16, but an impressive 8-1 run clinched the set point for the Argos, 25-17.
During the second set, the Argos took their first lead at 4-3. The Bobcats kept the game close as the Argos continued to lead by one after each squad tallied eight more, 12-11. Shortly after, Providence went on a tear to score nine straight and push the lead to nine, 21-12. The run sealed the opening set for the Argos as the Bobcats tried to close the gap, but it was too little too late, 25-19.
The Bobcats kept the third set close as Providence led for much of the beginning to lead, 16-14. Shaver sparked a five-point run to give the Argos their largest lead of the set, 21-14, and seal the straight-set victory as both squads tallied four more points to finish the match, 25-18.
Shaver led all scorers with 14 kills, with teammate
Lauren Brown tallying 12 kills of her own with both hitting for .370 and .360, respectively. Jensen dished out 32 assists and Dyer made 11 digs.

The Argos will host Mayville State for a Thursday night matchup at 7 p.m. on the eve of the Best Western Heritage Inn Plus Fall Classic. The tournament will be September 7 and 8 with matches beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday and ending following the 6 p.m. matches on Saturday.
