Volleyball Powers Past Carroll Saints, 3-1

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – University of Providence volleyball powered past Carroll as the Argos (11-5) defeated the Saints (13-8), 3-1, to improve to 11-5 and 3-1 in Frontier play.

In the opening set, the Argos struck first but the two squads began to trade points before the Saints tied the match up at 5-5. Following the tie, the Argos earned a kill from sophomore Ember Schwindt that sparked a 5-0 Argo run to push the Argo lead to five, 10-5. However, the momentum shifted back to the Saints as they outscored the Argos, 10-5, to tie the match back up at 15. A kill from Carroll and an Argo attack error gave the Saints the advantage at 17-18. The Argos responded with a dominant 8-0 run to close out the set and take the 1-0 advantage.
 
The second set was a battle as both teams showed that they wanted it in the beginning to get out to an 8-8 tie. Four Argo attack errors push the lead in the Saints favor, 8-12. The Argos rallied to bring the game back even at 16 all. The Argos held a 21-20 advantage after two lead changes, but a few Argo hitting errors gave the Saints set point, but two more Argo kills weren't enough as the Saints tied up the match at 1.
 
The Saints fell victim at the open of the third set to put the Argos on top, 5-3. The Argos maintained the momentum as they capitalized on some hot hitting and a few more Saints errors to push the lead to 12-7. The Argos maintained the lead as they outscored Carroll, 4-3, to bring the lead to six, 16-10. The Saints responded with an 8-0 run to grab the lead from the Argos, 16-18. A kill from junior Isabelle Parker tied the match up at 19 and another kill from Parker put the advantage back in the Argos favor, 20-19. Hot hitting from the Argos closed out the set on a 5-1 run to give the Argos the 25-20 win.
 
Carroll opened the set fourth set with two-straight points, but the Argos responded with two of their own to tie the match, 2-2. The Argos gained momentum as they outscored the Saints, 7-2, to take a 9-4 lead. Carroll pulled the deficit back within three, but the Argos dominated with an 8-1 run to push the lead to 10, 19-9. Carroll tallied two more points, but the Argos closed things out on a 5-0 run to take the 3-1 victory.
 
Junior Kelsey Shaver lead the Argos attack with 17 kills, followed by teammate sophomore Sydney Andersen with 16. Shaver also garnered three aces, in addition to leading the Argos defensively with senior Paige Jensen as both tallied 20 digs during the contest. Jensen also doled out a match-high 40 assists.

The Argos will take to the road as they will travel to Billings and Dillon, Montana to take on the Battlin' Bears on September 27 and the Bulldogs on September 29.
