MISSOULA, Mont. – The Argos played in a dual against the North Idaho Cardinals in Missoula, in addition to the Tyler Plummer Open in Dickinson, North Dakota on Saturday, January 12 hosted by Dickinson State University.
The Argos fell to the Cardinals by a 30-24 decision.
The Cardinals picked up a forfeit at 125 pounds to take the opening lead, 6-0.
Eli Walston picked up a second-period pin to tie up the match at six.
Chris Mesa gave the Argos the lead after earning a close 3-2 decision to put the Argos advantage at 9-6.
Shonn Roberts and
Jarren Komac claimed pins to extend the Argos lead to 21-6. The Cardinals closed the gap after earning a pin and two forfeits to retake the lead 24-21.
John Hensley garnered a 9-4 decision at 197 pounds to knot the game up headed into the heavyweight match. The Cardinals earned one more forfeit to take the match, 30-24.
During the Tyler Plummer Open,
TJ Baun claimed a third-place finish in the 141-pound weight class. He fell in his first match but claimed two pins and a 5-2 decision to advance to the third-place match. Against Jaime Mullins, the first period expired with no score. Baun tallied a pair of escapes, while Mullins earned a takedown to remain tied at two headed into the final two minutes. Mullins chose bottom and then garnered an escape an escape to go up by a point, but Baun tallied a takedown to close out the match and secure the 4-3 victory.
At 174 pounds,
Alex Quick fell in a 7-2 decision in his opening match. Quick earned a fall and two decisions to advance to the third-place match. Quick and Tyler Zeimen of Northwestern (Iowa) both notched a takedown and an escape to close out the first three minutes tied up at three. Quick dominated in the second and third period in route to two seven-point periods to take a decisive 17-4 major decision and claim third place.
Randy Keesler earned a third-place finish at 184-pound weight class. After falling in the opening match, Keesler claimed an 8-2 decision, an injury forfeit, and a 4-2 sudden victory, advancing to the third-place match. Keesler earned a first-period takedown against Steeler French of MSU-Northern to take a 2-0 lead. French chose escape and tallied an escape in the second period to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Keesler extended his back to two to open the final period, 3-1. French tallied a takedown to tie the match up at three. Keesler responded with an escape and a takedown to take a 6-3 lead. French tied things up over the final 30 seconds of the match as he tallied three points to send things into overtime. Keesler was able to earn a takedown at the 22-second mark of the overtime period to claim an 8-6 sudden victory and place third.
