Great Falls, Mont. - After spending four hours in the morning shoveling snow off the field to ensure the game would be played, the University of Providence men's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 victory over Walla Walla on Sunday.
The Argos started slow in the first half.
Fernando Gutierrez got on the board in the 22nd minute off the assist from
Seamus Quinn. Manuel Garcia scored right before half to make it at 2-0 lead. In the second half, Gudmundur Gudmundson started things off by scoring off the pass from
Alain Murhula. Minutes later Gutierrez scored again.
Seamus Quinn then assisted two more goals, one to
Bryan Gonzalez and the other to
Leo Almeida, to round out the scoring for the Argos.
"First half we didn't really get out of first gear," head coach
Matt Ball said. "It was very slow. Obviously we had some words at halftime about that. In the second half there was a lot more urgency in what they were doing. They actually looked like they wanted to score. It wasn't perfect but it was enough."
Ball was pleased with the new formation that the Argos have used since playing without
George Holloway, who is out with an injury.
"I think our adjustments are working," he said. "It worked against Rocky for a large part of the game. It looked good today. We want to get as comfortable as we can with it before the conference tournament. We want to get as much rhythm for the tournament as possible."
With the win today, the Argos have all but officially clinched the conference tournament. They will next play Carroll College on Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m. in Helena.
