Shepard Drops 31 as Argos Stifle Second-Half Comeback to Top Bulldogs, 101-95

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The No. 22 Argos stifled a Montana Western second-half rally to claim a 101-95 victory in the McLaughlin Center on Friday evening.

The Argos improved to 18-10 on the season and 9-8 in Frontier Conference play, while the Bulldogs fall to 9-19 overall and 3-14 in league play.

Five Argos tallied double-digit point totals on Friday evening as they surpassed the three-digit mark against the Montana Western Bulldogs. Jalen Shepard tallied a double-double with a season-high 31 points, while also tying for a game-high 11 boards, six assists, two blocks, and a pair of steals. Jack Taylor, Brandon Cotton, Jaxen Hashley, and Austin Starr were the other Argos in double-digits with 20, 16, 11, and 10 points, respectively.

The tandem of Cedric Boone and Kooper Kidgell led the Bulldogs with a combined 50 points. Boone tallied 29, while also adding three assists and two boards. Troy Scott led the team in the post with 11 rebounds, while also tallying 15 points in the loss.

Both squads traded leads until a jumper from Brandon Cotton put the Argos up 9-8. The Argos maintained the advantage until the Bulldogs tied things up at 25 and 27 with eight minutes to play. The Argos would take control over the final eight minutes of play as they outscored the Bulldogs, 25-8, to take a 17-point lead into the locker room, 52-35.

The Argos maintained a double-digit advantage through the 16:34-minute mark, but the Bulldogs quickly brought the game to a nine-point deficit through four minutes of the second half, 61-52. Western would get within four with less than nine minutes to play, 77-73, but the Argos quickly responded with six unanswered points to extend the game back to 10, 83-73. Providence continued to lead by double-digits with a minute to play, 97- 86, and the damage had already been done as a 9-4 Bulldog run wasn't enough as the Argos took the 101-95 victory.
