Argos Drop Season-Opening Doubleheader against No. 10 Owls

MEDFORD, Ore. – University of Providence softball conceded their season-opening doubleheader to the Oregon Tech Owls on Saturday at US Cellular Field #8 in Medford, Oregon.
 
GAME ONE – University of Providence 5 – Oregon Tech 16
How it Happened: The Owls tallied two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead headed into the third. VanDomelen only allowed two hits during the opening two innings. However, the Owls broke things open in the third as an eight-hit, seven-run third inning would give Oregon Tech an 11-0 lead. VanDomelen got things going for the Argos in the fourth. She got on base after being struck by a pitch with one down. Hanna Tarum had the hot bat as she produced a one-out double to drive VanDomelen home and put Providence on the board, 11-1. Oregon Tech had another big inning in the fifth as they plated five more runners to take a 16-1 lead. The Argos attempted a comeback in the fifth as Taylor Mathews connected on a two-out single to get things started. Kenzie Gast was walked and Skyla Nuebauer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Olivia Warren smashed a grand slam to clear the bases and cut the lead back to 11, but one final out would seal the game for the Owls, 16-5.
 
At the Plate: Warren was perfect during her at-bats, going 1-for-1 with four RBIs and the Argos first grand slam of the season. Tarum finished 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Argos.
 
In the Circle: VanDomelen (0-1) took the loss after allowing 11 runs over four innings with a strikeout.
 
GAME TWO – University of Providence 0 – Oregon Tech 12
How it Happened: Both sides tallied a hit during the opening frame as the game remained scoreless heading into the second inning. The Owls put four on the board in the second after scoring on a passed ball and then a three-RBI home run gave the Owls the four-run advantage. Oregon Tech plated three more runs in the top of the third to take a seven-run lead. A ground-out plated the Owls first run of the inning, followed by an RBI-triple, and a passed ball plated the Owls runs in the inning to put them out 7-0. A one-run fifth gave the Owls an eight-run advantage heading into the fifth inning, 8-0. Oregon Tech plated four more runs in the fifth inning to close out the game, 12-0.
 
At the Plate: Nuebauer, Tarum, and Shayla Cole went 1-for-2 on the day for the Argos.
 
In the Circle: Brieanna Clifford (0-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs on five hits through four innings. Jaden Williams relieved Clifford in the fifth, allowing four runs on four hits.
 
Up Next
The Argos will close out their series with Oregon Tech on Sunday with games at 1 and 3 p.m. MT (noon and 2 p.m. PT) at US Cellular Field #8 in Medford, Oregon.
