CALDWELL, Idaho – The Argos earned their first win of the season as they picked up a dominant 6-0 shutout of the Yotes before falling the second game of the day to split Wednesday's doubleheader.
GAME ONE – University of Providence 6 – College of Idaho 0
How it Happened: Taylor Mathews didn't waste any time as she got things going in the top of the first with a solo homer to left-center field during the Argos' first at-bat to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Argos were able to load the bases before a College of Idaho pitching error would advance
Karlie Southworth to first and send
Hanna Tarum home to close out the top of the frame with a 2-0 Argo advantage. The Argos would as Mathews would reach first on an error and a double from
Hannah VanDomelen would put runners on second and third.
Hanna Tarum would then clean up with a two-out 2-RBI single to double the Argos lead to four through one and a half. The score would remain unchanged through five innings. However, Tarum would tally her third RBI of the day with another two-out RBI single to score Cole and give the Argos a 5-0 lead.
Olivia Warren would pick up her first RBI of the day with a two-out RBI single of her own to push the Argos lead to six, which would eventually prove to be the final.
At the Plate: Mathews had a game as she had two hits on five at-bats but would score half of the Argos runs and knock in one herself. Tarum also had a stellar game as she led the Argos with a game-high three RBIs, while going 2-for-4 and tallying a run of her own.
In the Circle: VanDomelen pitched a complete game to earn her first win of the season (1-2) and pick up a pair of strikeouts, while only allowing six hits on the day and only giving up two walks.
GAME TWO – University of Providence 3 – College of Idaho 8
How it Happened: The Argos continued the momentum into the second matchup of the doubleheader as Mathews would open things up again with a productive at-bat, singling up the middle. Tarum would then produce another clutch performance, connecting on a two-out single to send Mathews to third before she would eventually come home on a Yotes throwing error, 1-0. The Argos tallied another pair of runs in the top of the third. Tarum tallied a single to open up the frame, but one out later Southworth notched her first hit of the day on a 2-RBI homer to left field to give the Argos a 3-0 advantage. However, the lead would close quicky as the bottom of the frame saw a College of Idaho double and a sacrifice fly to bring the Yotes deficit down to one, 3-2. Things would remain that way through five and a half innings, but a pair of singles and a one-out home run would put College of Idaho on top, 5-3. The Yotes would earn another run from a single following a double and a single to give the Yotes the three-point advantage, 6-3. The seventh point would come from the Yotes tallying a run during an Argo double play, before one last single would put things at its final, 8-3.
At the Plate: Tarum and Mathews came up big for the Argos yet again as they went 3-for-4 and 2-for-3 with a run each. However, Southworth played the best during the second matchup as she would only tally one hit on the day but smashed a two-run homer and a run of her own during the contest.
In the Circle: Brieanna Clifford pitched five innings, allowing five runs on six hits, but committed five errors.
KJ Schweikert closed things out for the Argos in the sixth as allowed three runs on four hits and also committed a pair of errors.
