Argos Split Doubleheader to Close Series with Northwest Christian

EUGENE, Ore. – University of Providence softball closed out their series with Northwest Christian on Saturday with another split doubleheader as they took game one before falling in the series finale.
 
GAME ONE – University of Providence 4 – Northwest Christian 3
How it Happened: Through three and a half innings, the game remained scoreless on both sides. However, the Beacons got things going in the bottom of the fourth to get on the board first. Following a ground out from the ead-off batter, the second batter was hit by pitch to get on base. Northwest Christian then strung together a single and a double to plate Allen and take a 1-0 lead. The Argos would earn a second out, but a wild pitch would plate the Beacons second runner and give they would take a 2-0 lead headed into the fifth. Skyla Nuebauer got the inning going as she took first after being hit by a pitch. Taylor Mathews would make it to first as well on a fielder's choice, with Nuebauer advancing to second on an error. Hannah VanDomelen was walked to load the bases for the Argos, before Hanna Tarum would smash an RBI-single and a Beacon error would plate two Argos to tie things up with no outs, 2-2. Karsten Williams followed things up with an RBI-single of her own to score VanDomelen and put the Argos up by one, 3-2. The Beacons would make a pitching change, but a wild pitch would advance Tarum to third and Williams to second to have two Argos in scoring position. Olivia Warren knocked the Argos' third RBI-single of the inning to score Tarum and give the Argos a two-point advantage still with no outs. The Beacons notched a strikeout and then a double play would end the inning. The Beacons rallied in the final half inning as their lead-off batter singled to get on base with no outs. However, following a stolen base and a pair of ground outs, they would plate their third run of the match, but a pop-out would eventually seal things for the Argos, 4-3.
 
At the Plate: Tarum led the Argos with productive at-bats, going 2-for-3 and driving a runner home, in addition to earning one herself. Warren and Williams would tally the Argos two other RBIs in the win.
 
In the Circle: VanDomelen pitched the complete game, tallying her second win of the season. She allowed three runs on nine hits, while also putting away a batter.
 
GAME TWO – University of Providence 0 – Northwest Christian 8
How it Happened: Much like the earlier game, the game remained scoreless through the early part of the game. The Beacons tallied two runs in the bottom of the third. With two on base, the Beacons scored following a strikeout and a passed ball to get on the board first, 1-0. A ground-out would plate the second runner of the evening to put Northwest Christian up by a pair of runs, 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Beacons would get into scoring position following a pair of singles and a wild pitch. The Argos would tally a strikeout, but the Beacons followed it up with a 2-RBI single to push their lead to four. An RBI-single would close out the inning as Northwest Christian led by five. The Beacons would put runners in scoring position again in the fifth as two singles and a stolen base would put runners on second and third. Northwest Christian would sacrifice bunt to plate their leading runner and advance one to third. The Argos would close out the inning without allowing the runner on third to score to keep the deficit at six, 6-0. The Argos would put Khalyn Hageness in to pitch for Brieanna Clifford, but pair of walks and a single would score the Beacons seventh run of the game. Northwest Christian would close out the game with a sacrifice-fly to put around the final runner and close the game by run-rule after the sixth inning.
 
At the Plate: Hannah VanDomelen led the Argos with a pair of hits on three at-bats. Kenzie Gast was also productive at the plate, going 1-for-2 on the day.
 
In the Circle: KJ Schweikert pitched for three and a third innings, allowing five runs on six hits, but putting out a season-high five batters. Clifford took over for an one and two-thirds innings, allowing another run to score and a pair of hits, while tallying two strikeouts. Hagness closed out the game for the Argos, allowing two runs on one hit.
 
Up Next
The Argos will continue their road trip as they travel to Salem, Oregon to take on the Corban University Warriors on Monday, March 18 and Tuesday, March 19. First pitch for Monday is scheduled at 2 and 4 p.m., while Tuesday will be at 10 a.m. and noon.
