Argo Softball Topped Twice on Saturday in Road Series Against Thunderbirds

SURREY, Canada – Argo softball's comeback came up short on Saturday as the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (12-12, 8-7 CCC) defeated the Argos (4-15, 4-10 CCC) during Saturday's doubleheader to take the series victory.

GAME ONE – University of Providence 4 – University of British Columbia 12
How it Happened: The Argos tallied a hit in the top of the first but couldn't get anything going as the Thunderbirds would get on the board first. British Columbia's lead-off batter got on board with a single, before advancing to third on an Argo error. A ground out would plate the Thunderbirds first run, followed by an RBI-double to put British Columbia up by two after the first.

The Argos opened the second with a pair of walks, but a pair of ground outs would put one through for the Argos to cut the lead in half, 2-1. Following a pair of outs, the Thunderbirds combined a couple singles to put runners in scoring position. The Thunderbirds would then knocked a 2-RBI triple to extend their lead to three, 4-1.

The Thunderbirds kept things going in the third. The Argos would tally two outs, but a two-out RBI-triple would put the Thunderbirds fifth run through, 5-1. The Thunderbirds plated another run with a two-out RBI-single to take a 6-1 lead. British Columbia continued with a two-out RBI-triple and a RBI-single to take an 8-1 lead after three.

A pair of Argo errors put a Thunderbird on third, before a wild pitch would bring them home with one out, 9-1. The Thunderbirds would put three more aboard on an RBI-single and a dropped fly ball to take a 12-1 lead.

The Argos would put three across in the top of the fifth with an RBI-double, an RBI-single, before one more would cross as a double play would close the game, 12-4.

At the Plate: Taylor Mathews was the Argos most productive batter, going 2-for-3 and earning a run. Hanna Tarum, Karlie Southworth, and Shayla Cole would punch through the Argos three earned runs during the contest.

In the Circle: Hanna VanDomelen opened things up, pitching two and two-thirds innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits. Brieanna Clifford closed things out, pitching one and one-third innings and allowing five runs on four hits. Both VanDomelen and Clifford would tally a strikeout.

GAME TWO – University of Providence 5 – University of British Columbia 6
How it Happened: The Argos got things going early. Skyla Nuebauer opened things up with a single. Following an out, she would steal second and advance to third on an error. The Argos tallied an out to open the bottom of the inning, but a fielding error and a stolen base would put a runner in striking distance for the Thunderbirds. A one-out RBI-single would tie things up 1-1, followed by another one-out RBI-single to put the Thunderbirds up by one, 2-1. The Argos tallied their second out, but a pair of walks would load the bases. A wild pitch brought another Thunderbird home, 3-1, and a passed ball would put one more across to give British Columbia a 4-1 lead.

The Argos would get two back in the third. A lead-off double, followed by an RBI-double would bring the Argos within two, 4-2. The Thunderbirds tallied a pair of outs, but a two-out RBI-single would bring the Argos back within one, 4-3.

The Thunderbirds would push their lead back to two in the bottom of the frame after a single, a stolen base, before a one-out RBI-single would finish things off, 5-3.

The fourth and fifth frames were quiet as the game would remain 5-3, but the Argos would manufacture another run in the sixth after a double, ground out, and a one-out RBI-single would bring Southworth home, 5-4.

In the seventh, the Argos would reach on a throwing error, before a one-out RBI-double would plate the Argos fifth run of the game to knot things at five. After two outs, the Thunderbirds would load the bases with a pair of walks and an Argo fielding error. One final two-out RBI-single would give the game-winning run to the Thunderbirds to close out regulation, 6-5.
