PHOENIX, Ariz. – Argo women's golf sat fifth following the front nine holes, but an impressive showing over the back nine helped the Argos leapfrog the Carroll Saints for fourth following the opening round of the Frontier Conference Championships at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Argos combined to shoot 30-over-par during holes 10 through 18 as the University of Providence posted a 376 (+88) to start the tournament. The Argos sit currently only three strokes behind third place and only 35 behind second place.
The defending Frontier Conference champion Rocky Mountain Battlin' Bears shot a 324 (+36) over the first round of competition. The Lewis Clark Warriors came in second, shooting a 341 (+53), followed by the Montana Tech Orediggers, who shot a 373 (+85), sitting only three strokes ahead of the Argos, 376 (+88), in fourth. The Carroll College Saints remain five strokes behind the Argos, 381 (+93), in fifth and the MSU-Northern Skylights round out the field in sixth after carding a 419 (+131) after day one.
Casey Babinecz paced the Argos as she carded an 8-over on the front nine, before finishing the day with a nearly identical 9-over on the back nine to finish with 89 (+17) on the day.
McCall Enott finished second for the Argos with 20-over during the first round, after carding an 11-over on the front nine but finished the day with a 9-over to improve to 92 (+20).
Catrina Babinecz sat second following the opening nine holes at 9-over but fell to third on the back nine to finish carding a 93 (+21) on Monday.
Britan Dandrea and
Sydney Kellar rounded out the Argos field shooting 102 (+30) and 106 (+34) following the opening round of competition.
The second round of competition will begin on Tuesday morning as the teams will tee off tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m.
