Argos Win Thriller in OT

Great Falls, Mont. – Two clutch goals from Fernando Gutierrez led to a thrilling come from behind overtime victory for the Argos against Evergreen State.

The Argo's found themselves in a hole early, allowing a goal in the first minute from Joe DiCarlo off the assist of Maxton Houser. It took the Argos nearly 30 minutes, but they finally evened the game with a goal from Seamus Quinn in the 32nd minute.

The Argos were in a similar position in the second half. DiCarlo found the back of the net in the 51st minute, and the Argos spent the remainder of the 2nd period fighting to equalize the game. Things were looking good for Evergreen State, until a header from Gutierrez with two minutes to go netted the game at two a piece. Gutierrez then had the game winning header two minutes into overtime off the set piece from Manuel Garcia to win the game for the Argos.

"I joked with Guti at the end that he could have done better on one of the goals we allowed," head coach Matt Ball said. "He made it up for it with his equalizer in regular time. I think he was tired so he just decided to end it in overtime."

Despite being down for a majority of the game, Ball believed the Argos controlled the tempo for the majority of the game. The confidence that the team was playing with carried them in overtime to give them the victory.

"Our plan for overtime was not to make mistakes," he said. "We controlled the majority of regular time. We made two sloppy mistakes on the back line and they scored two goals. They didn't have many more chances than the goals that they scored. We were just sloppy. We knew if we came out and just didn't make those mistakes, the game was always going to be ours."

Despite the mistakes, the team regrouped and stuck together, Ball said.

"We've talked all year about the togetherness that's in the team right now," he said. "They're a very close group. They knew they weren't playing badly, they just made a couple of errors. If we give teams those chances, we're always going to have to deal with it. Hopefully that stops in the future. Our team is close. They know that if they keep playing they can compete and win games quite comfortably."

The Argos embark on a four game road trip, which starts against Oregon Tech next Friday at 4 p.m. Ball said the road trip will be a great test for the team to see where they're at.

"We need to find some consistency," Ball said. "It's good that we're winning so you could say that we're consistent in that sense. But we haven't played to the best of our ability yet, and if that happens, we'll have a good chance in the conference. Until that happens, games like this are always going to happen where it's not as comfortable as we should be."
